Slide 1 - Slide

What do you remember
about properties of
materials?

Slide 2 - Mind map

Today we are learning...
That some materials dissolve in liquid
The correct vocabulary to describe how solids dissolve into liquid
How to plan a fair test

Slide 3 - Slide

Key Vocabulary
Soluble -  a material that will dissolve when mixed with a liquid.
Insoluble - materials that don't dissolve in a liquid and the particles are still visible.
Dissolve  - When a solid becomes incorporated into a liquid to form a solution.
Solution - When a substance dissolves, it might look like it has disappeared, but in fact it has just mixed with the water to make a transparent (see-through) liquid called a solution.

Slide 5 - Video

Do all solids dissolve in liquids?
Materials that dissolve into liquids are called soluble.
Some examples of soluble materials are...

The solid has not ‘disappeared’ or ‘vanished’ but is still in the liquid; it has just combined with the particles in the liquid to become part of the liquid. This is not a permanent change. No new materials have formed, and the
solid can be recovered from the solution.

Slide 6 - Slide

Investigating which materials are soluble

Today you are going to test which of the following materials are soluble
  • flour
  • rice
  • baking powder
  • jelly
  • oil
  • vinegar

Slide 7 - Slide

Fair test
You need to plan a fair test...
What is being tested?
What will stay the same?
What will you change?
What will you measure?
What are your predictions?

Slide 8 - Slide

Before you start...
What does dissolve mean?
A
when a solid melts into a liquid
B
when a solid becomes incorporated into a liquid
C
when a solid disappears into liquid
D
when a liquid disappears and becomes a gas

Slide 12 - Poll

Which is the odd one
out and why?

Slide 13 - Open question

Coffee and powdered drinks dissolve in water, tea is loose leaf and is either kept in a teabag or tea strainer.  It brews but does not dissolve.
