What was music like in the classical period?

The music contained balanced musical phrases.
All the music had an identifiable tune or a melody.
(This is why we often recognize music from this period.)

Joseph Haydn
Wrote one hundred and six symphonies.
Was friends with Beethovens but did not
like Beethovens manners.
Hadyn included many surprise loud
parts to wake up people who had fallen
asleep. First to make a string quartet.

Ludwig Van Beethoven
Born 1770 and as a boy learned to play
the piano, violin, and the organ. In 1776
he moved to Vienna in order to meet
Mozart. In 1791, he became a student of
Joseph Haydns. Five years later he
became deaf but continued to create
music for others and wrote his famous
9th Symphony in 1824.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart was a child prodigy on the piano
and the violin. He wrote over 600 peices
of music. Beginning when he was just
five years old. Mozart wrote his first
opera at the age of eight.

  • Was a bit bigger, louder, and included more wind.
  • There was no baton in the classical period.
  • Included four bar measures.
  • The conductor faced the crowd during the performance.

Piano Forte
The classical orchestra did not use the
harpsichord.
Instead the Piano Forte became
popular because you could play soft
and loud.
