Governor of Alabama: George Wallace

“segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”

De mensen van Alabama waren tegen de opheffing van de rassenscheiding.

George Wallace wilde graag gouveneur worden en beloofde de bevolking dat hij de rassenscheiding in stand zou houden. Hij zei:

1963 –    a federal district judge ordered the university of Alabama to accept Vivian Malone and James Hood

In 1963 bepaalde een federale rechter dat Vivian Malone moest worden toegelaten tot de Universiteit van Alabama.

George Wallace wilde dit voorkomen omdat hij had beloofd de 'segregation' in stand te houden.

Toen Vivian voor het eerst  naar binnen wilde gaan

ging hij in de deuropening staan om te zorgen dat ze er niet langs kon. dit heette de

Uiteindelijk heeft de president van de US het opgelost door te dreigen met het leger.

Jaren later wilde Wallace zelf president worden maar tijdens het campagne voeren werd hij neergeschoten.

De communisten in het zuiden hadden een guerilla leger en werden de Viet Cong genoemd. afgekort VC.  In het leger alfabet is dat Victor Charlie.

De Amerikaanse soldaten waren altijd bang om plotseling overvallen te worden door de Viet Cong. 

Forrest zegt daarover : 'we were always looking for this guy named Charlie.'

De Amerikanen gebruikten napalm in de oorlog. Napalm bestaat uit benzine waar iets aan is toegevoegd dat maakt dat het kleeft. Het brand sneller en langer en de brandende spetters blijven overal op plakken,

Het gebruik van Napalm zorgde voor heftige protesten tegen de oorlog in de USA.

Het veroorzaakte later ook ernstige gezondheidsproblemen bij de Amerikaanse soldaten.

Lieutenant Dan denkt dat alles al vast staat in het leven. Hij gelooft dat het zijn lotsbestemming is om met eer te sterven op het slagveld. Net als zijn voorvaderen.

Forrest redt iedereen van zijn eenheid. Dus ook Lieutenant Dan die hij daardoor de mogelijkheid om als oorlogsheld te sterven ontneemt.

Forrest redt Bubba ook maar Bubba sterft.

The black panthers zijn een burgerrechten beweging.

De black panthers strijden voor gelijkheid in scholing, behuizing, banen, en burger rechten.

De black panthers zijn ook tegen de oorlog in Vietnam.

Forrest komt bij de black panthers terecht als hij met Jenny en haar vriend mee gaat.

Als hij daar is wordt hij kwaad als hij ziet dat Jenny wordt geslagen door haar vriend.

Bij het wereldkampioenschap pingpong in Japan trainen de chinezen samen met de Amerikanen. Na afloop wordt de Amerikaanse ploeg uitgenodigd om een tournooi te komen spelen in China.

China zocht op deze manier diplomatieke toenadering tot het westen. Er was al jaren geen contact tussen het communistische China en het kapitalistische Amerika. Een jaar later ging de Amerikaanse president op staatsbezoek in China.

Forrest gebruikt het geld van de sponsordeal voor de pingpong batjes om een garnalenboot te kopen. In eerste instantie vangen ze niets. 

Dan is er een orkaan (hurricane Carmen) Al andere boten zijn daarna verwoest behalve die van Forrest.

Forrest vraagt zich de hele film af : of hij een lotsbestemming heeft en zo ja wat het dan is.

Het veertje staat symbool voor het toeval.

Een veertje wordt meegenomen door de wind, je weet niet waart het heen gaat of waar het neerkomt.

Forrest vraagt zich af, staat mijn lot vast of gebeurd alles door toeval net als bij het veertje.

Mama Gump leert Forrest hiermee dat hij niet bang te zijn voor het onbekende.

Als het een keer tegen zit

(vieze bonbon) wordt het daarna altijd weer beter (lekkere bonbon)

Wees niet bang voor wat je niet weet. Als je tegenslag hebt wordt het daarna altijd weer beter.
