Je gebruikt dit als je wil vertellen wat iemand anders heeft gezegd:
Jason: "I'm reading a very good book."
Jason said (that) he was reading a very good book. 

Tony: "My mum isn't home yet."
Tony said (that) his mum wasn't home yet.

Je gaat altijd een stapje terug in de tijd (want je vertelt het later):

Direct: present simple --->                  indirect: past simple
Direct: present continuous: --->        indirect: past continuous
Direct: past simple --->                         indirect: past perfect

Je gebruikt deze woorden om herhaling van een eerder gebruikt woord te voorkomen.

We are looking for a new bike. Perhaps one in white?
Wow! I really like those flowers. Especially the ones in pink.

- Use 'one' for singular: That's the book I want, I like that one.

- Use 'ones' for plural: Those are the ones I want. 

A pair of trousers is used for plural, because it has two legs. Same goes for a pair of scissors.
