The Eastern Roman Empire was being called the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire eventually grew larger and became very powerfull (Figure 3.3, p. 58)

The Westen Roman Empire was invaded by Germanic tribes (barbarians) and lost a lot of knowlegde and culture.
