States of matter
Matter exists in several different forms, called states.
The three most familiar states are solid, liquid, and gas.
Matter can change from one state to another for instance by heating (melting ice into water) or cooling (freezing water into ice).
Slide 7 - Slide
Solid
matter in this state has a fixed size and shape
examples: a rock, a book or a table
Slide 8 - Slide
Liquid
matter in this state has a fixed size but it's shape depends on the container it is in
example: milk changes shape when we pour it from a carton in a glass, the shape changes but the amount stays the same
Slide 9 - Slide
Gas
matter in this state has not a fixed size nor shape but can be expanded to fill a large container or squeezed into a smaller container
example: air or helium in a balloon
