Walk and Talk
  • Walk around the classroom and find a partner (do this three times)
  • Read the hints on your paper to the partner
  • Your partner will answer if you have conductive, sensory neural, or mixed hearing loss
  •  Find three people to ask and then take a seat when you are done

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Types of Hearing Loss Cont.

NOT ALL hearing loss can be corrected by use of hearing aides or alternative listening devices (cochlear implants).

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Cochlear Implant vs Hearing Aids

Hearing aid
cochlear implant
Write this in your notebook

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

What is the difference?
Hearing Aids
Hearing aids amplify sounds so they may be detected by damaged ears.

Cochlear Implants
Bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
Signals generated by the implant are sent by way of the auditory nerve to the brain, which recognizes the signals as sound.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Cochlear Implant Problems
  • Damages the hearing you may have had
  • Functions or acts as a replacement to your cochlea
  • Does not achieve EXACTLY what hearing people hear
  • Always successful? No
  • What can happen if a baby is implanted but it's not successful? Loss of language acquisition (acquiring language)

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Slide 18 - Video

Deaf Culture and Cochlear Implants
  • Some people in the Deaf culture may not agree with getting cochlear implants
  • The Deaf culture would prefer children to experience ASL and the Deaf culture before getting one
  • The Deaf community is typically not present or represented when hearing parents find out their child is Deaf

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Slide 20 - Video

Causes of Deafness
  • (1-3 childhood illnesses)
  • Spinal Meningitis – the inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
  • German Measles/Rubella
  • Prolonged High Temperature
  • Deaf Gene (50% - 60%) heredity
  • Age induced
  • Prolonged exposure to loud noise (loud music, work-related noise)
  • RH Factor – blood type incompatibility
  • Premature birth
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Head Trauma

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

  • Let's see some numbers

  • 10% of Deaf parents have Deaf babies
  • 90% of Deaf Children have hearing parents
  • 5-7% of hearing parents sign to their Deaf children

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

The Ear/Intro to Deaf Culture Continued
  • Review and summarize the different causes of Deafness (warm-up)
  • Summarize the meaning of Culture
  • Hypothesize if cochlear implants and hearing aids fit under Deaf or deaf
  • Predict the meaning of Deaf and deaf
  • Conflicts even within the Deaf Community about cochlear implants
  • Compare the cultural/medical difference of words Deaf and deaf

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Previous Class
  • We compared the similarities and differences between hearing aids and cochlear implants
  •  Took a look at how we hear sound and how the ear works
  • Looked through the lens of the Deaf community regarding cochlear implants
  • Heard what it is like to have a cochlear implant
  • Discussed the medical approach to "fixing" deafness

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

Schoology
  1. Go into unit 1 folder
  2. This weeks folder
  3. Open the graphic organizer
  4. You will turn this in at the end of the lesson

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

Slide 27 - Video

Today- how everything will connect
  • The Deaf vs deaf will tie and connect with the medical  and cultural component we learned about last class
  • You will continue to view the perspective of Deaf people and their culture/language
  • You will compare and define the differences between Deaf and deaf

Slide 28 - Tekstslide

Warm-up
Hearing aids vs cochlear implants

Slide 29 - Tekstslide

If a person has some hearing what option or instruments would be the best for them?
hearing aids
cochlear implants

Slide 30 - Poll

Remember
  • A person must have some hearing in order for a hearing aid to work. Why is this, what do hearing aids do?

Slide 31 - Tekstslide

True or False: Cochlear implants sound exactly how hearing people can hear.
True
False

Slide 32 - Poll

False
  • Cochlear implants take years of training in order for people to understand and interpret what they are hearing.

Slide 33 - Tekstslide

True or False: With a hearing aid, the device is implanted between your skull and skin. If false, explain.

Slide 34 - Open vraag

False
A hearing aid sits behind your ear and amplifies the hearing that you may have. Cochlear Implants are surgically implanted in your ear in order to bypass the damage.

Slide 35 - Tekstslide

Deaf vs deaf
  • Complete this on your own. Make sure to answer the questions build into the lesson. This will reflect your participation grade. Turn on CC on the bottom of the videos. Look for the small CC box, it's white.
  • The handout that goes with this lesson is located in Schoology
  • Please be on your best, when you are done you can work on homework.
