What is matter?
matter (noun):
- the substance of which a physical object is composed

- material substance that occupies space, has mass, and is composed predominantly of atoms 

(Merriam-Webster dictionary)

States of matter
  • Matter exists in several different forms, called states. 
  • The three most familiar states are solid, liquid, and gas.
  • Matter can change from one state to another for instance by heating (melting ice into water) or cooling (freezing water into ice).

  • matter in this state has a fixed size and shape

  • examples: a rock, a book or a table

Liquid
  • matter in this state has a fixed size but it's shape depends on the container it is in

  • example: milk changes shape when we pour it from a carton in a glass, the shape changes but the amount stays the same

  • matter in this state has not a fixed size nor shape but can be expanded to fill a large container or squeezed into a smaller container

  • example: air or helium in a balloon
