Drag and Drop Questions in LessonUp

Manual

What Are Drag and Drop Questions?

In addition to the quiz, open question and the mind web, you can enrich your lessons with a drag and drop question to provide engagement with the material and your students.
With drag and drop questions the students can drag items to the right place in a LessonUp lesson. The students can either do this separately or together in their classroom. These questions create different types of learning like topography or timelines.

Create a Drag and Drop Question

To create a drag and drop question, click in the editor on the gray area with the white plus sign, or click the yellow '+ Add’ button.

Choose the item 'Drag and Drop'.

Note: a drag and drop question cannot be created in an (existing, regular) slide. You will have to choose for the item 'Drag and Drop'.

Drag Target And Drag Item

A drag and drop question always consists of two parts: a drag item and a drag target.
The drag target: is the area where items will be dragged to.
The drag item: the item (text, image, hotspot, audio) that will be dragged.

Drag items are located under the '+ Component' button.
The normal components are blue-colored, the components that can be used in a drag and drop question are yellow-colored.
A 'normal' component (text, image, hotspot, audio) can always be made a draggable item later. More on this later.

CREATE A DRAG TARGET
Click on the red button ‘Drag target' button to create a drag target.
A drag target appears in the slide. The drag target can be recognized by the red color, and has a number.
When the drag target is clicked, a settings-wheel appears. Click on the pencil: you can now customize the drag target.
Have the ability to design the drag target according to your own wishes, for example by adding a background color or image.
It's also possible to make the borders of a drag target 'invisible'. This means that a drag target is not visible, but is present and functional. This option is good to use with, for example, a topographical assignment.

Click on the tab ‘Drag and drop’ within the settings. Then remove the check mark for 'Show drag target icon and red border'.
CREATE A DRAG ITEM
Click on '+ component' and click on one of the yellow buttons to create one or more drag items. A drag item can be a text, image, hotspot, symbol or audio clip. Although they differ in content, the effect is the same.
A drag items appears in the slide. The drag item can be recognized by the blue color, and has a letter.

In this example, the drag item ‘Text’ has been chosen. To create other drag items like audio clips etc. works the same.
When the drag item is clicked, a settings-wheel appears attached to the box.

CONnecting Drag item and drag target

In order to use a drag and drop question, drag target and drag items must be connected to each other. This can be done in different ways, but the principle of the drag and drop question remains the same.
CONNECTING A DRAG TARGET
Click on the arrow next to the number in the red box at the top of the drag target.
Select the desired drag item. This can also be multiple drag parts, depending on the question. A connection line is displayed to visualize the connection.

The letter of the connected drag item is also displayed.
CONNECTING A DRAG ITEM

using Drag and drop questions in the classroom

As with the other interactive elements within LessonUp, students with a device (smartphone, tablet or computer) can use the drag and drop question during the lesson.
WITH DEVICES
Start the lesson by pressing ‘Teach’.
Just like the other interactive elements a pin code will appear.
After students have entered this code on their device (using the LessonUp app or by going to lessonup.app), their names will appear on the central screen.
When all students are logged in, the lesson continues when the teacher presses the lower right arrow keys.

A preview of the drag and drop question will appear. This will allow you to give an instruction before the drag and drop question started.
Click the button 'Start drag and drop'. The students can now start on their own device with the drag and drop question.
The pupils can now move the drag items to the right place(s).

By clicking 'Done' at the bottom right corner a student turns in his answers . As long as the drag and drop question hasn't been closed by the teacher, a student can adjust his answers.
Teacher View
When the drag and drop question has started, the progress appears on the central screen. In this screen, the teacher can see which pupils have not yet started (blue), which students have started (light green) and/or which students have already submitted the towing question (dark green).

Optionally, this screen can also be used to show the drag and drop question on the central screen. Select the Show question button.
A tab appears at the top of the central screen. When the teacher clicks on this tab, the screens of all the pupils appear (both handed in and not handed in)
The teacher can enlarge a screen of a student by clicking on the thumbnail.
Click on 'End responses' in the bottom right corner to stop the student input. From that moment on, pupils can no longer change their answer.
Then click on 'Show correct answer' to see the correct answers, and provide the students with feedback.
The answers are displayed on the central screen...
... and on the screens of your students.
The results of the drag and drop question are displayed after the 'To result' button has been clicked.
WITHOUT DEVICES
The drag and drop question can also be used, without devices, on the central screen or smartboard. The drag items can be dragged via the computer/tablet that is connected to the central screen or, if present, a touch screen.

To do this, remove the check mark for 'Student devices' at the bottom of the screen.

Two buttons will appear on the bottom right of the screen.

Reset: this will reset the drag items to their initial position.

Check: checks the input against the correct answer.
