What is it?
A hinge question is a multiple-choice question at a ‘hinge moment’ in the lesson. Typically, this is the moment when students begin processing the material independently, or when the topic changes. It is essential for both students and teachers to know where they stand with regard to the content and their skills. By asking a good hinge question, you, as a teacher, can gain a clear understanding of your students’ progress in just a few minutes. A good hinge question has the following characteristics: • The question should be answerable by students in 2 minutes or less. • The question provides direct feedback to the teacher within 30 seconds. • The question helps you decide whether to proceed with the next part: go or no-go (80%-20%). • The question does not contain ‘obvious’ distracting options. • All answer choices are plausible.
How do you use it?
As mentioned, this method works best when transitioning to a different phase of the lesson or a new topic. It provides good insight during these moments, allowing you to decide whether to move forward or offer additional support.
