What is in tobacco?

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds and around 60 known carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals). Tobacco mostly contains nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide and other chemicals.

Effects on air passages: The Cilia.

Epithelial cells line the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles in the respiratory system. Epithelial cells have tiny hairs on them called cilia. The cilia sweep out mucus which is useful in trapping pathogens (disease causing microorganisms). Cigarette smoke contains chemicals that paralyze cilia, resulting in the build-up of mucus and a smoker’s cough. Smoke also irritates the bronchi, leading to bronchitis.

Effects on the Alveoli

Smoke damages the alveoli walls causing them to break down and join together, forming bigger air spaces than normal.

As a result of this, the blood carries less oxygen which puts strain on the heart.

The risk of developing coronary heart disease or having a stroke is increased.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide, CO, is found in cigarettes. It combines with the haemoglobin in the red blood cells which reduces the ability of the blood to carry oxygen. This puts extra strain on the heart, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease or having a stroke.

Carcinogens are cancer causing chemicals. Tobacco contains lots of carcinogens including tar. Smoking increases the risk of cancer, particularly lung, mouth and throat cancer.

Effects on Babies

When mothers smoke during pregnancy, there is a higher chance of losing the baby through miscarriage. Babies born to smoking mothers generally have lower birth weights and are more likely to suffer from respiratory infections and asthma. They are also more likely to experience reduced growth, intellectual development and have birth defects.
