We all belong to a culture - somewhere we find a shared sense of values, belonging and connection to a particular group in society.
Defining Culture
We all have multiple cultural identities. These are linked to our ethnicities, likes, beliefs and can be shaped by our friends and our families. The vast mix you all have is what makes you unique, but also helps you connect with others...
Cultural Identity
Can you think of things you like or have adopted from other cultures? (hint: Music is usually a major adoption!)
When we are young we learn from our surroundings. Where we grow up has a big impact on culture. It can change the language we speak, the slang we use and regional accents we adopt as our own.
Location
Family has a huge impact on our culture - typically we inherit the values, religious beliefs and even food preferences as our parents and carers - which we then share with others as we grow.
Family
Diversity describes the range of differences within a group of people. This can include age, race, gender, orientation and beliefs. It can also reference chosen culture, such as music taste or fashion.
Defining Diversity
What are the benefits of being part of a diverse community?
The Benefits
Promotes tolerance and understanding
Encourages economic growth
Broadens the talent available for local jobs
Gives us access to new foods and music
Helps us understand more about the wider world!
