Y8: Reading Graphs
Slide 1 - Slide
When reading graphs in science it is important to be very accurate. You get very little margin for error.
On this graph, the value of A is 78%.
If you wrote 77% or 79% it was marked wrong.
Slide 2 - Slide
To be able to read a graph accurately, you must be able to read the scale. In other words, you need to know how much one small box (graduation) is worth.
This also applies to reading scales on measuring equipment such as thermometers and measuring cylinders.
Slide 3 - Slide
In this case my scale goes from 0 to 10 and I have 10 small squares.
Each square is worth 1. So to find the number the arrow is pointing at, I count up in 1s.
Slide 4 - Slide
What number is the arrow pointing to?
Slide 5 - Open question
What number is the arrow pointing to?
Slide 6 - Open question
In this case my scale goes from 0 to 10 and I have 5 small squares.
To find the value of one square I divide 10 by the number of squares. Each square is worth 2. So to find the number the arrow is pointing at, I count up in 2s.
Slide 7 - Slide
In this case my scale goes from 0 to 20 and I have 5 small squares.
To find the value of one square I divide 20 by the number of squares. Each square is worth 4. So to find the number the arrow is pointing at, I count up in 4s.
Slide 8 - Slide
In this case my scale goes from 0 to 1 and I have 5 small squares.
To find the value of one square I divide 1 by the number of squares. Each square is worth 0.2. So to find the number the arrow is pointing at, I count up in 0.2s.
This method will work for any scale.
