Bean project: chose your exp
This project is about growing a bean. The goal is to measure the growth of the seeds under different conditions. You may choose one of the following sets of conditions to test your bean growth:

Option 1: One half of the seeds will be put in the dark, the other half will grow in daylight.
Option 2: One half of the seeds will grow in daylight, the other half in artificial light.
Option 3: One half of the seeds will be in a clear glass jar and the other half in a jar of a different color.
Option 4: Create your own situations!

You will work in pairs: each of you is responsible for one of the jars!

Bean project: overview
  • Project you will do at home (in pairs)
  • You chose your own experiment
  • Every person will get 4 beans (at the end of the lesson)
  • Day 1 starts when your beans start to grow. Then take pictures for 14 days, every day.

All information about the project can be found in the classroom in the document ''Bean project''

Learning goals
I can:
  • Give examples of different energy sources
  • Identify different forms of energy
  • Identify the type of energy conversion that takes place
  • Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy and identify which one applies
  • Explain the difference between sustainable and non sustainable energy sources and identify which one applies

Energy
Most common forms of energy:

Slide 12 - Slide

This item has no instructions

Law of conservation of energy
Energy is not created or destroyed

Energy can be transformed from one form
to another

Slide 13 - Slide

What is “lost” energy?
Energy is never destroyed, but some energy conversion is not useful for us

Example: Your macbook heating up, instead of converting the electrical energy to only light and sound → we “lose” energy in the form of heat

Electrical energy
Electrical energy is “produced” in a power station by converting energy

  • Chemical energy ⇒ thermal energy(heat)
by burning coal or gas
  • Thermal energy(heat) ⇒ kinetic energy
Heating water produces steam, the steam is used
to rotate the steam turbine
  • Kinetic energy ⇒ electrical energy
This happens in the generator, similar
to what happens in a dynamo

Renewable = renews itself
non-renewable =  runs out, wont be able to use it forever
Homework
Next week:
  • Read the Bean project manual (Introduction/growing the beans) (classroom)
  • Complete the ''Bean project LSN1'' LessonUp lesson
  •  Prepare labjournal for ''Heat of combustion of a peanut''

Week after testweek:
  • Make exercises 1-11 of topic 2.1 in your workbook
