A star is a luminous ball of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, held together by its own gravity.

The life cycle of a star
  • Nebula (cloud of gas and dust) — gets pulled together by it's own gravity
  • This starts a process called nuclear fusion (hydrogen turns into helium). This is an energy generating process.
  • This is called the main sequence
  • Red giant: will swallow Mercury and Venus— white dwarf — black dwarf (invisible)
  • Super red giant — supernova — neutron star — black hole
