During the test, you will NEED a computer + working headphones. The test is NOT allowed on mobile phones. 
During the test you will have a set time to work through the questions. Don't linger too long on just the one.

Step 1: Introduction (Dutch)
  • Find out the main topic.
  • They tell you in Dutch!

Slide 6 - Slide

Step 2: Introduction (English)
  • Get used to the speakers' voices and accents;
  • Confirm main topic and listen for extra information;
  • Focus on picking up key words.

Step 3: Reading question
  • You have about 15 seconds during the test;
  • Keep main topic in mind;
  • Underline key words;
  • Identify positives and negatives in the answers.

Step 4: Listen for key info and link ABC
  • Take notes related to the key words;
  • Keep in mind the main gist (de grote lijn);
  • You are allowed to write on your paper during the test!

Step 5: Back to the question
  • Elimination: which answer can you cross off?
  • Compare positives and negative answers to what you heard.
  • On the real test you only have a couple of seconds for this.

Quick check after listening/watching
  • Did you answer the question before the clip ended or immediately after?
  • Did you read the next question before the next clip started?

Concluding tips
  • Apply this method during CITO practice;
  • Focus on main gist when using other footage;
  • Watch and listen to as many materials as possible:
  • Podcasts (BBC The Why Factor, New York Times Daily); the news (CNN10, BBC); programmes (BBC Panorama); documentaries; British Netflix series.
