Let's see what the difference is between the Present Simple and the Present Continuous

Slide 9 - Slide

Present simple
You use it for..
  1. Facts
  2. Habits
  3. Things happening regularly

Keywords: usually, often, always, never, sometimes

Slide 10 - Slide

Present simple
I always walk to the park

They are sometimes crazy

The soccer match starts now

Slide 11 - Slide

Present Continuous
So.. the present simple is pretty... simple.
But what about the continuous form? How and when do we use the present continuous?

Slide 12 - Slide

Present Continuous
Don't start stressing. The present continious is AS easy as the present simple! Watch!

Slide 13 - Slide

Present Continuous
You use the pr. cont. when:

  1. Something is happening right now
  2. Something is going to happen very soon
  3. When you are annoyed by something

Keywords: (right) now, at the moment
always and never can be used to express irritation

Slide 14 - Slide

Present Continuous
I am walking towards the park right now.

The dog is always howling!

You are never listening!

Slide 15 - Slide

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous
Present Simple: Feiten, gewoonten, regelmatigheden

Present Continuous: gebeurt NU, is binnenkort klaar.

Check!

I play tennis
I am playing tennis

Slide 16 - Slide

Present Simple vs. Present Continuous
I play soccer
--> ‘I play soccer’ tells us that playing tennis is something the speaker always does. It is part of a routine or habit. We can call this a permanent situation.

I am playing soccer
--> ‘I am playing soccer’ tells us that the speaker is playing soccer right now. Soon the game will be over. We call this a temporary situation.
