Lesson 1 - What is trash?

This lesson is provided by Sea Shepherd. Sea Shepherd is a marine conservation organisation with a mission to protect the ocean and marine wildlife.  Sea Shepherd works globally on a range of issues impacting the ocean, running numerous direct action campaigns each year.  Ocean pollution is one issue Sea Shepherd is working on.

What is trash?

Ask students: “What items do you think become trash?”
Trash found in the ocean is called ocean pollution and comes in many different forms, from paper, plastic, glass, metal, wood, fishing gear to chemicals. Basically, anything that doesn’t belong in the ocean.

Over 100 million tons of fish caught each year.

How does it become trash?

Discuss with students:
“When you think about swimming in the ocean and you dive down to see what is there, what marine animals do you expect to see? “
“What else do you think you would see?”

Discuss the image with students and ask them what doesn’t belong in the ocean.

Illegal Fishing

Illegal fishing means that the fishermen enter the territorial waters of a country or regulated marine zone without permission or without a license for the fish they intend to catch.

They are stealing from these waters.
