Good afternoon!
Schedule:
  • Learning goals
  • Problem solving
  • Describing data
  • Comparing data

Slide 1 - Slide

Learning goals
At the end of this lessons I can:
  • Describe the shape of a set of data
  • Compare multiple sets of data
  • Research data

Problem solving

Slide 4 - Slide

Problem solving
Problem solving strategies:
- Trial and Error
- Divide problem in smaller problems/steps
- Work backwards (start with the answer)
- Realize the problem (literally DO the problem)
- Organize your information differently (ex. Table)
- Use algebraic methods
- Change your perspective/view to gain new insights

Slide 5 - Slide

What vocabulary could you use to describe a data set?

Slide 6 - Mind map

What are the measures of dispersion?

Slide 7 - Mind map

Measures of dispersion
Range: The difference between the highest and the lowest value if a data set

Interquartile range(IQR):
The difference between Q1 (quartile 1) and Q3 (quartile 3) of a data set
Data set:
Range =

Q1 =

Q3 =

IQR =

Q3 =

IQR =
20-2 = 18
2(13+15)=14
2(5+6)=5.5
14-5.5 = 8.5

Slide 9 - Slide

Measures of central tendency
Mean: The average of a data set
Mean = sum of all values/amount of values

Median: the middle value of a data set (when the data is in order)

Mode: The value in the data set that occurs most often
Data set:
1 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 5 6 7

Find the mean, median and mode

Describing data
No modal value:
there is no mode
Bimodal:
there are 2 modes
Multimodal:
there are more than 2 modes
Unimodal:
there is 1 mode

Slide 13 - Drag question

Describing data (shape)
How is the data centered?
- Centered on lower values?
- Centered on higher values?
- Evenly distributed?
- Symmetrical?

Slide 15 - Slide

Comparing data

- "Both classes had no outliers. Nobody scored extremely high or low on the test"
- "The median marks for class 1 is slightly higher than the median for class 2"
- " The IQR from both classes are very close. The middle 50% of both classes have a similar spread"

Take out your diaries

Homework for Monday 11-10-2021:
                            Practice 6 on p. 318-320: #1, 3, 4, 5, 6

Slide 17 - Slide

Continue with your research
1. Calculate the five point summary, IQR and outliers for both males and females.
2. Describe the data for both males and females.
3. Compare the male data with the female data.
(4. Compare your data with the data of another group.)
