Spring break!

In pairs, answer these questions. After one minute, switch the roles:

1. What is the best activity you did during the holidays?

2. Did anything fun or unexpected happen?

3. Did you read / listen / watch (or perhaps even speak or write?) in English?

English sayings - literal or not?

I will show you some English sayings. If you think the saying would make sense literally (letterlijk), then you have to stand up! If you think it wouldn't make any sense literally, then you can sit on your chair.

Got it? Good!

It's raining cats and dogs.

Wouldn't make sense literally.

No animals fall from the sky.

What does the idiom mean? -> heavy rain. (= hevige regen)

The early bird catches the worm.

would make sense literally

Birds catch worms!

What does the idiom "the early bird catches the worm" mean? -> the one who is early has a higher chance of being successful.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

would make sense literally

You could put eggs in a basket.

What does the idiom "don't put all your eggs in one basket" mean? -> don't depend on one thing / person/.

bite the bullet

would not make sense literally

You can't bite a bullet.

What does the idiom "bite the bullet" mean? -> force yourself to do something unpleasant.

cost an arm and a leg

would not make sense literally

You don't give your arm and your leg for a PS5.

What does the idiom "an arm and a leg" mean? -> something that is extremely expensive. (extreem duur)

Break the ice.

would make sense literally.

You could break ice.

What does the idiom "break the ice" mean? -> to make people who have never met before feel relaxed.

Dutch saying - literal translation

1. Find a Dutch saying.

Example: Nu komt de aap uit de mouw.

2. translate it literally (letterlijk) into English.

Example: (deze klopt dus niet in het Engels, maar dat is ook de bedoeling bij deze opdracht) Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve.

3. Show it to your classmate next to you.

4. find the correct English version. Example: (deze klopt dus wel) The cat is out of the bag.

5. find the meaning of the saying. example: the truth is revealed.

6. some funny literal translations will be shared in class.
