In English there are two types of articles: 

* THE (definite article) 

*  A or AN (both INdefinite articles)

Examples: 

The book on this shelf is mine.

I’d rather eat  a pear than an apple.

Het gaat om de klank, niet om de spelling

When NOT to use an Article?

Languages	She speaks Spanish.
Mealtimes	See you at lunchtime .
Cities and countries	She lives in Amsterdam (Japan, Oslo ...) * Execptions: The Netherlands, the US, the UK
Street names and places	I travelled by taxi from Heathrow airport to Oxford street.
Some signal words	I am working next week. Did you go on holiday last summer

Je gebruikt GEEN the bij een algemene verwijzing naar:	Je gebruik WEL the als je specifiek verwijst naar:
publiek gebouw - he was brought to hosipital by an ambulance	publiek gebouw - He was brought to the hospital in Hoofddorp
jaargetijde - In summer I always go to France	jaargetijde - I was born in the summer of 1975
maaltijd - She never skips breakfast	maaltijd - She loved the breakfast I cooked her this morning
