B: The curious case of Phineas Gage

B: The curious case of Phineas Gage

He was an American railroad construction foreman who had a terrible accident where a large iron rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his brain’s left frontal lobe. Miraculously he survived the accident and lived for another 12 years. Before the injury, he was known as a responsible, hardworking, and well-liked individual. However, following the accident, his personality changed dramatically. He became impulsive, impatient, and had difficulty making decisions. He also exhibited inappropriate social behavior, often using profanity and engaging in rude or disrespectful conduct. His friends remarked that “He was Gage no longer”.
