Photo of members of the Bonus Army camped out on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building - July 1932
What is the context of the source?
-  The Great Depression left many veterans unemployed and in desperate need of financial support.
 - The Bonus Army consisted of demonstrators, including World War I veterans who gathered in Washington, D.C. demanding early payment of their service bonus  originally scheduled for payment in 1945.
- The marchers set up camps and shantytowns in various locations including areas close to the Capitol building.
- After Congress rejected their demands, President Hoover ordered the U.S. Army to clear the camps. This led to violent clashes, with the use of tear gas, cavalry, and tanks.
- The forced removal and destruction of the camps further damaged Hoover's public image and contributed to his loss in the 1932 presidential election.
