In Chapter 6, Simon knows Detective Isaac Fagbenle is goading him into a response, but he is so afraid that Paige had been killed that he does not care.

Isaac finally says that Aaron was murdered and he does not know where Paige is. He asks Simon to account for his whereabouts the previous evening.

     What does Simon say?

In Chapter 7, Ashley “Ash” Davis and Diane “Dee Dee” Lahoy are together in a car.

Dee Dee is beautiful and has been abused by men her entire life. Ash is devoted to her and she loves him platonically.

Ash notes that Kevin's murder “couldn't be like Chicago” (62).
What does she refer to?

In Chapter 8, Simon returns home. He and Ingrid walk the dog and talk. Ingrid said police questioned her.

They arrive at Mott Haven, the community where Paige and Aaron were living.

When they reach the apartment where Paige had lived, they meet a man who introduces himself only as “a friend.” He is later identified as Cornelius.

There are clues throughout the novel, and some of them are hidden in incidental comments and statements so that the reader will not pay attention. Can you think of an example?

Slide 6 - Open question

Who is Cornelius? He seems to be a minor character when he is first introduced. What could happen to make him more important?

In Chapter 13, Simon picks up his quest by going back to the apartment building where Aaron and Paige were living, and goes to see Cornelius.

Why does Cornelius give a gun to Simone?

The author uses literary devices throughout the novel, including metaphors, similes, and analogies.

One example appears when Simon and Ingrid arrive at the place where Rocco is dealing drugs.
Simon sees four people who “were sprawled out as though they had no bones or were old socks someone had casually tossed there” (83).

Why is the imagery of this description is important?

Slide 13 - Slide

A similar description takes place later in the scene when they see a large man stand up, “like Godzilla wading out of the water” and walk toward them “like a planet with two feet” (84).
