Lesson goals:
  • Explian how we can decrease
        air resistance
  • Explain why friction is a
        good thing
  • Explain why a bag
        lies stationary on a table

Slide 2 - Slide

Slide 3 - Video

Why do ducks fly in this formation?

Slide 4 - Open question

V-formation - why?
  • To keep each other out of the wind/ to profit from the upward motion of air
  • Cyclists do the same
       - This reduces air resistance
Cyclists also hunches up

Slide 5 - Slide

Forces when moving off
- Friction (Shoes dont slide)
- Muscular force - pushes forward

Fish pushes water with it's tail
Bird pushes air away with it's wings

Slide 6 - Slide

How does a helicopter move?
pushes air down with its rotor blades

Slide 7 - Slide

Slide 8 - Video

How does a rocket move?

Slide 9 - Open question

Rocket
  • Exhaust gasses are pushed out at high speed
  • Rocket pushes off against its own exhaust gasses.

Slide 10 - Slide

Support force
  • If you place a school bag on a table...
  • ... the table supports the bag, the table bends a very small amount, however it is exactly enough to support the bag

Slide 11 - Slide

aeroplane
- Supported by air
- Due to the shape of the wings
   air is pressed down

Slide 12 - Slide

Make quations 11 up to 16
No discussion

When you are done, read the
'knowing more' of paragraph
OR look at youtube video's on how aeroplanes can fly.
