Lesson 1
Pathogens basics

Book page 145-148

Slide 4 - Slide

Disease & Immunity
  • name a disease

Slide 5 - Slide

Disease & Immunity
- because something in the body doesn't work properly; non-communicable disease

- because a foreign substance/organism entered the body; communicable disease

Slide 6 - Slide

Disease & Immunity
- non-communicable disease - not passed from person to person (non- transmissible disease)

- communicable disease - passed from person to person (transmissible or infectious disease)

Slide 7 - Slide

How do you know you have a disease?

Slide 8 - Slide

Signs and Symptoms of disease
  • A symptom is a manifestation of disease apparent to the patient himself/herself
  • A sign is a manifestation of disease that the physician perceives.
  • A symptom is subjective evidence of disease.
  • A sign is objective evidence of disease.
  • Symptoms represent the complaints of the patient, and if severe, they drive him to the doctor's office

Learning goals:
  • I know what pathogens are.
  • I understand and can explain the difference between microbes and pathogens
  • I can explain how pathogens make us ill.
  • I can identify and classify various pathogens based on various  characteristics.
  • I understand how bacteria and viruses grow and multiply
  • I can explain how pathogens spread

Summary:
  • Microbe/microorganism - an organism of microscopic size.
  • Pathogen - microbe which causes disease
  • Examples of pathogens are bacteria, viruses, fungi
  • Bacteria multiply every 20 minutes by duplicating itself and splitting in two.
  • Viruses multiply themselfs using the host cell machinery.
  • Pathogens affect hosts by producing toxins and killing cells .
