Types of Irony

Situational irony: When something happens that's the opposite of what was expected or intended to happen.
Dramatic irony: When the audience is aware of the true intentions or outcomes, while the characters are not.

The Private Patient

Crime
Crime fiction is the genre of fiction that deals with crimes, their detection, criminals, and their motives.

First there is the crime, usually a murder; then there is the investigation; and finally the outcome or judgement, often in the shape of the criminal's arrest or death.

Giving Your Opinion
When asked for your opinion, explain why that is the way you feel about the story, with examples from the text.

DON'T: "I didn't like it."
DO: "I can't empathise with the main character, because he talks about being 'too old to make each other miserable'. It makes him sound negative about life throughout the text."

Slide 11 - Slide

Giving Your Opinion
"I can't empathise with the main character" = opinion
"because he talks about being 'too old to make each other miserable'" = example from the text
"It makes him sound negative about life throughout the text." = explanation of your opinion, the answer to WHY can't you empathise (or why you didn't like the story).
