General rule
We use
some

We use
any
in questions.
We use
any
in negative sentences.
Their compounds (so someone/anyone/somewhere/anybody/etc.) follow the same rules.
Slide 2 - Slide
We always use
some
in affirmative sentences.
Examples:
He bought
some
flowers for me!
I left my keys
somewhere.
We use
some
in question sentences when we suspect the answer to be 'yes'.
Examples:
May I have
some
sugar, please?
Would you like
something
to eat?
Slide 3 - Slide
We mostly use
any
in question sentences.
Examples:
Have you bought
anything
else?
Have you got
any
luggage?
We always use
any
in negative sentences.
Examples:
I didn't see
anybody.
I haven't done
anything
wrong.
Slide 4 - Slide
After the word 'if' we use
any.
Examples:
If
there are
any
letters, could you let me know?
Let me know
if
you need
anything.
We use
any
when we mean 'doesn't matter which'.
Examples:
Any
song will do. I don't mind which.
