Adjective (=bijvoeglijk naamwoord)

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord zeg iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord:

That is a beautiful car. 

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. 

Adjective (=bijvoeglijk naamwoord)

Je gebruikt ook een bijvoeglijk naamwoord na de werkwoorden to be, to seem, to feel, to look, to smell, to sound en to taste.

This box feels heavy. 

She looks beautiful. 

Adverb (= bijwoord)

Een bijwoord zegt iets over een werkwoord (hoe?), een bijvoeglijk naamwoord of een ander bijwoord.

Carmen sings beautifully. 

They have an extremely beautiful house. 

The fox jumped very quickly. 

Hoe vorm je een bijwoord?

De meeste bijwoorden worden gevormd door –ly toe te voegen achter het bijvoeglijke naamwoord: 

beautiful – beautifully 

quick - quickly

Hoe vorm je een bijwoord?

Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden die eindigen op:

•  -le wordt: -ly                                         terrible - terribly 
•  medeklinker + -y wordt: -ily           easy - easily 
• -ic wordt: -ally                                       fantastic – fantastically

Uitzonderingen

Sommige bijwoorden hebben een onregelmatige vorm of hebben dezelfde vorm als het bijvoeglijk naamwoord:

good - well

fast - fast

long - long

hard - hard

Adjective or Adverb? 

She is a good dancer. 

It is raining heavily. 

Please be quiet. I'm trying to read.

This soup tastes good. 

Meghan was smiling happily.
