Remember... Modals exist in one form only!

They ought not blame others.

The Task

Read the sentences on the next few slides very carefully, and rewrite them in the passive voice.

1. The members will discuss the question in tomorrow's meeting.

Few more points to remember...

Change with ‘to+verb’

‘to + verb’ is changed to ‘ to + be + V3'

Active-It is time to send for the maid. 

Passive-It is time for the maid to be sent for.

It is time to roll the ball.

It is time to roll.

It is time for ball to be rolled.

It is time to shut the door.

It is time for the door to be shut.

Changes with Prepositions

Prepositions used
with the verbs in Active Voice are retained in 

Passive Voice

Active-Farmers were looking at the sky for rains.

Passive- The sky was being looked at by the farmers for rains.

I am to do this.

This is to be done.

This is to be done by me.

We must write to him.

He must be written to by us.

He must be written by us.

They threw away many chances.

Many chances were thrown away.

Many chances were thrown away by them.

Imperative Sentences

‘Let the’ is
introduced in passive form.

Active-Shut the door.

Passive-Let the door be shut.

Inform the police.

1. Police be informed.
2. Let the police be informed.

Do not pluck flowers.

1. Flowers not be plucked.
2. Let flowers not be plucked.

Let him sing a song.

1. Let a song be sung.
2. Let a song be sung by him.

Work hard.

1. Let work hard.
2. You are ordered to work hard.
3. You are requested to work hard.
