Discovering Chance & Uncertainty!

Learning Intention

I can describe the chance of an event happening.

What Is Chance?

Chance tells us how possible it is for something to happen. Sometimes things are certain, and sometimes they're a surprise!

What Is Uncertainty?

Uncertainty means we are not sure if something will happen or not. We often have to guess!

Our Four Chance Words:

  • likely - it probably will happen

  • unlikely - it probably wont happen

  • certain - it will defiantly happen

  • impossible - it cannot happen

Chance in the Weather

Is it certain it will rain tomorrow?

No! The weather is often uncertain.

Flipping a Coin

When you flip a coin, it could land on heads or tails.

Each is just as likely.

Real-Life Example: Snack Time

Is it likely, unlikely, certain or impossible that Primary 2 will get out to play at break today?

You might get a piece of fruit or a sweetie for snack. Which do you think is more likely today?

Uncertainty in Games

Will Primary 2 play Olly the Octopus in PE?

  • likely

  • unlikely

  • certain

  • uncertain - impossible to know

It's uncertain! We have to wait and see.

Mini Task: Likely or Unlikely?

Look around! Is it likely or unlikely you will see a cat on your walk home today?

Share your ideas.

Let's Reflect

Now you know about chance and uncertainty! What is something today that surprised you?

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
