What is communication?

What is communication?

Communication is a way of passing on, receiving and responding to information.


Good communication skills are essential in the beauty industry as it can make the difference between a poor treatment and an excellent one.


Poor communication often leads to confusion, misunderstanding and more importantly, mistakes.


There are 2 types of communication we use:

Non-verbal

What is verbal communication?

Verbal communication

Verbal communication is the use of spoken or written words to share information, ideas, or feelings with others.

In a beauty therapy context, verbal communication happens every time you speak or write to a client, colleague, or manager.

Questioning is a vital part of communication within a beauty salon.

Body language


Body language is a large part of non verbal communication.

You subconsciously pick up on peoples body language which helps you to interpret what they are thinking.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS:

We can easily see whether a person is happy, sad, angry, bored, confused etc just by looking at their facial expressions.


GESTURES:

People will often use hand gestures to show how they are feeling

MOVEMENTS:

Nodding your head for a yes or no answer, crossed arms and legs, fidgeting


EYE CONTACT:

Staring, looking at someone in the eye, lack of eye contact


POSTURE:

How you hold and present yourself
