Adverbs of Manner

Learning how to describe our actions!

Learning Goals

By the end of this lesson, we will be able to:

  • Identify adverbs of manner in sentences.

  • Turn adjectives into adverbs by adding '-ly'.

  • Use adverbs to tell stories about how people do things.

Our Magic Words

Adverb

A word that tells us more about a verb.

Manner

The way in which something happens or is done.

Describe

To give details about someone or something.

Wait, How Did He Do That?

Imagine a world where people only talked about what they did, but never how they did it!

If I say 'The boy walked,' you don't know if he was tired, happy, or in a hurry.

Did he walk slowly or quickly?

🧠

The Secret Rule: Adjectives to Adverbs

Most adverbs of manner are made by taking an adjective and adding -ly to the end.

  • Quiet + ly = Quietly

  • Careful + ly = Carefully

  • Loud + ly = Loudly

Remember

If the adjective ends in 'y' like 'Happy', we change the 'y' to an 'i' first: Happily!

Where does the adverb go?
