Negations with TO BE

Subject + Verb + Rest

• I am a student; I was a student.
• You are a doctor; You were a doctor.
• She is my sister; She was my sister.

Subject + Verb + NOT + Rest

• I am not a student; I was not a student.
• You are not a doctor; You were not a doctor.
• She is not my sister; She was not my sister.

Rewrite as negation:
We are friends.

Rewrite as negation:
They were married.

Rewrite as negation:
He is happy.

Negations with 2+ verbs

Subject + Verbs + Rest

• I can play the guitar.
• We will go to the movies.
• We have been to Spain.

Subject + Verb 1 + NOT + Verbs 2+ +  Rest

• I can not play the guitar.
• We will not go to the movies.
• We have not been to Spain.

Rewrite as negation:
He has seen this movie.

Rewrite as negation:
He will call you back.

Rewrite as negation:
You should go to bed.

Negations with helper verb TO DO

Subject + Verbs + Rest

• I ride my bike.
• She cooks dinner.
• They walked in the park.

Subject + DO/DOES/DID + NOT + Verbs  + Rest

• I do not ride my bike.
• She does not cook dinner.
• They did not walk in the park.

Rewrite as negation:
We watched TV.

Rewrite as negation:
I listen to jazz.

Rewrite as negation:
She works at the library.
