SDG 13

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Slide 2 - Slide

Affects on ecosystems
Certain organisms have adapted to work at optimum temperatures (remember enzymes).
When temperatures change organisms cannot adapt quick enough to survive.
Often the link can be made: the larger the organism, the slower the adaptations.

Slide 3 - Slide

Affects on coral
Increased ocean temperatures and changing ocean chemistry are the greatest global threats to coral reef ecosystems. These threats are caused by warmer atmospheric temperatures and increasing levels of carbon dioxide in seawater.
As atmospheric temperatures rise, so do seawater temperatures. This warming causes corals to lose the microscopic algae that produce food that corals need, placing stress on the corals. Without this algae coral also lose their coloration—a condition known as coral bleaching— because the loss of algae reveals the white color of the calcium carbonate structure underlying the polyps.
Severe or prolonged bleaching can kill coral colonies or leave them more vulnerable to other threats such as infectious disease.

Rising sea levels
Because of global warming the ice caps are melting.
This is causing the sea levels to rise.
This is bad news for countries like the Netherlands.

Ice melting
What could happen

Slide 6 - Slide

Droughts
Little to no rainfall for prolonged periods of time.
Many plants can survive dry seasons, but not when they start lasting multiple years.
When rain does fall, it is often massive amounts and the dry land cannot absorb the water properly causing flooding.

Slide 7 - Slide

More extremes
More extreme weather conditions appear more often.

This leads to more natural disasters:
  • forest fires
  • floods
  • storms
  • droughts

Slide 8 - Slide

Carbon Dioxide
There are many ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the industrial sector, including energy efficiency, fuel switching, combined heat and power, use of renewable energy, and the more efficient use and recycling of materials.
