Adverbs and adjectives (grammar 9A)

Adjectives and adverbs

Adjectives = Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden

• Zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord (mens, dier of ding)
  She is beautiful, what a beautiful horse, a beautiful day

Adverbs = Bijwoorden

• Zegt iets over een werkwoord (hoe iets gebeurt), of een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, of een ander bijwoord. Het gaat dan om 'hoe'.
  She danced beautifully (ww) . She danced extremely beautifully (ander bijwoord). An extremely beautiful day. (bijv. naamwoord) 

Adjective = bijvoeglijk nw

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord gebruik je om iets of iemand 

te omschrijven. Het zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord:

That is an amazing girl.

We all love that funny movie.

I think he is a terrible teacher.

Adverb = bijwoord

Een bijwoord gebruik je om aan te geven HOE iemand iets doet. Een bijwoord omschrijft:  

1. een werkwoord, 

2. een ander bijwoord, 

3. een bijvoeglijk naamwoord of de 

4. een hele zin          

Adverb = bijwoord

1.  Mary sings beautifully.                                          (werkwoord) 

 2. Mary  sings  incredibly beautifully.               (ander bijwoord) 

 3. I ate an amazingly delicious steak yesterday.           (bijv. nw) 

 4. Hopefully, she will call me back later.                        (hele zin) 

Hoe maak je een bijwoord?

Bijvoeglijk naamwoord + LY

IC - ALLY

(fantastic - fantastically)

Y - ILY

(funny - funnily)

LE-LY

(terrible-

terribly)

Uitzonderingen

good - well

quite - quite

fast - fast

hard - hard

long - long

Adverbs ending in -Y

For adjectives that end in -y, we remove the -y and add -ily:

crazy  -  crazily 

happy  -  happily

Adverbs ending in -LE

For adjectives that end in a consonant + le we remove the -e and add -y:

terrible  -  terribly 

horrible  -  horribly

noble  -  nobly

idle -  idly

Adverbs ending in -IC

If the adjective ends in -ic, we add -ally:

ironic  -  ironically

enthusiastic  -  enthusiastically

realistic  -  realistically

Except: public  -  publicly

Irregular Adverbs

Some adverbs are irregular:

 

fast - fast     The man drives very fast (quickly).

good - well   You speak English very well.
Long-long not longly
Low-low

Let op! 

1. My teachers are nice.

2. That car looks beautiful.

3. Haggis smells awful.

Na koppelwerkwoorden zoals: to be (zijn), to seem (lijken), to feel (zich voelen) + to look (eruitzien), to smell (ruiken), to sound (klinken), to taste (smaken) gebruik je geen bijwoord, maar een bijvoegelijk naamwoord.

In het Engels staan die op een specifieke plek in de zin !(belangrijk voor de woordvolgorde)
