Three steps

1.  Identify the tense

                          3. Change the time expressions

I =you

we = they

myself = yourself

What happens when the reporting verb is in the past tense?

• Police said they had been searching for the missing child for two days.
  
• I told my parents I would always do my homework. 

Said is never followed by a Direct/Indirect Object!

                              Direct Speech

Direct Speech is used to express what is being said at this moment. You can often find this in plays. 

For example:

Jane: "I like school." (said)

Anne: "I am studying French."(said)

John and Philip: "We took some photos." (said)

The friends: "We are swimming at 10 am."(said)

Archie: "I have eaten breakfast."(says)

Harry: "Why do you love me?"(asked)

She: "Don't let me alone."(tells)

Let's have a look...

Jane said (that) she liked school.

Anne said (that) she was studying French.

They said (that) they had taken some photos.

The boy said (that) they had been swimming at 10 am.

Andy says (that) he has eaten breakfast.

Henry asked me why I loved him

She tells me not to let her alone.

The busdriver stated:
"I did not have enough time to stop the bus.
