Who's land?

• -1000 Kingdom of Israël and Judea 
• 70: Romans expel the Jews. They settle in other countries
  
• 1516: Ottomans: this part is called Palestine 
  
• 1918: Ottomans lose in ww1, British take over. Partition 
•  1948: After ww2: Two-state solution. (Zionism)
  Civil war, Israël invades more land
• 1967: Six-day war 
• 2023: Attack from militant Hamas on Israeli in Gaza. Israel responds with full military power

The Inheritance 

The first years of the state Israel 

• 14 may 1948: David Ben Goerion declares the state of Israel

• 15 may 1948: The last of the English troops leave Israel

• 16 may 1948: The Arabic countries of  Egypt, Syria, Libanon en Jordan attack Israel

Violence as solution?

• Palestinina forces unite in the  PLO (Palestinian liberation army ), founded in  1964, (leader: Yasser Arafat)

• Goals: The destruction of the state Israel, push out the Israelis and save the Palestinians.

• Western Jordanbank is occupied since  1967 by Israel 

• Some religious Jews believe that this area belongs to Israel

These Israelis came to live in this area (in settlements) and are called settlers

To protect itself against attacks, Israel has built a wall around the West Bank. This wall has made many Palestinian wells inaccessible.

A wall is build around gaza strip, to protect the Jews against violence from this area

Intifada:

• First intifada ( 1987....Israel was criticised internationally
• Oslo accords (1993-1995....Palestinian authority)
• Second Intifada ( 1995....Oslo accords were violated, Hamas, Sharon....tension rose)
