London Culture 3

Slide 1 - Slide

In four lessons we'll be learning about some of the horrid things that have happened in London's history. You'll also find out more about a cultural piece that some of you will have the priviledge to see.

Goal:
By the end of the lesson you'll know more about 1 historical event + 1 of the most culturally significant shows of this time.
Today you'll be hearing more about the Great Fire of London but first let's discuss act 2 of Dear Evan Hansen...

Task:
Listen, do the exercises in class and for homework: write down the answers to the 3 questions and hand  this in before the lesson next week!

ACT 2
In Act 2 we continue where act 1 left off, with ‘The Connor Project’.
Evan and Alana want to raise $ 50,000 to reopen an abandoned apple orchard. This was where Evan and Connor supposedly spent time together (so the lies continue). But Evan gets a little distracted from the project (and Jared and his own mother) because of his new relationship with Zoe and his newfound family.

When Evan’s mom asks him why he didn’t tell her about the project or his friendship with Connor after seeing the video of his speech (before the break), he gets angry at her. Saying that she’s never around – and then he rushes off to the Murphys where he bonds with Larry (you’ll see a video about their bonding moment in a while). At a later moment they invite Evan’s mom over for dinner, which turns into a horrible fight over his secrecy once they get home.

ACT 2
Lies never last forever… and so Alana finds inconsistencies in the (fake) emails from Connor.

When Evan panics and asks for Jared’s help, he refuses. They had got into a fight before and Jared had said that Connor’s death was the best thing that could’ve happened to him because all of a sudden he was no longer invisible and had the girl of his dreams.

Evan apologizes to Alana, showing her his letter/Connors suicide note.
She posts it online and it goes viral but ends up in hateful comments towards the Murphy family.

ACT 2
After all this, Evan’s conscience is starting to bug him and he wants to come clean. He visits the Murphys and admits that he fabricated the whole thing. Not such a good thing so ‘words fail’.
Once Evan gets home, Heidi is waiting for him after having seen the letter. She knew immediately that it was Evan’s therapy assignment and she apologizes for not seeing how much her son had been hurting. Evan then even admits that his fall (where he had broken his arm), was actually his own suicide attempt.

ACT 2
One year on…Evan asks Zoe to meet him.
She agrees to meet him at the orchard that was reopened in Connors memory. Evan then apologizes for all the hurt he had caused her family and thanks her for keeping his lies secret.
She forgives him, saying that ‘everyone needed it for something’.
Finally, Evan writes himself one last letter…

On the next slide I'll show you a little something that is also, but in a different way, in the play.
This guy was actually the first Larry Murphy and was also known as an actor in one of America's most popular soap operas: As The World Turns.
(Perhaps you heard of it - or not, you may be too  young - they quit in 2010 ;))

Slide 7 - Video

Remember last week's story of the plague? And that I mentioned that some people thought that it vanished in 1665/1666 because of the great fire of London
(but I told you that wasn't true)?

Well, let's now look at that fire...

(Video takes approximately 7 minutes.)

Slide 9 - Video

What do you think?
Mull over the following questions!

What actions could have prevented or reduced the effects of the fire?

How important was the role of the mayor of London in fighting the fire?

Robert Hubert was found guilty of starting the fire and was hung..
Do you think he was to blame?

Let's check out just one more video...

*I've added the questions from the slide on there as well*
Hand it in next week
(print it out please)!!!
Fill in the worksheet and hand it in once you've finished (before the lesson next week).
