Indirect vs. Direct Speech
Direct:        Paul said: "I am going on a holiday next week."
Indirect:    Paul said that he was going on a holiday next week.

Direct:        Anna said: "I like your new hair."
Indirect:    Anna said that she liked my new hair.

Indirect speech = vertellen wat iemand eerder gezegd heeft.

Als de situatie is voorbij is (of veranderd), dan wordt de zin altijd verleden tijd: 
Joey: "My brother is going to pick us up."
Joey said that his brother was going to pick us up.

Alex: "I hate Geography."
Alex said that he hated Geography, but now he kind of likes it.

Als je wilt aangeven tegen wie iemand iets heeft gezegd gebruik je "told":

"What did you tell the police?" 

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je "said" (of "said to")
