Incomplete combustion
When there is too little oxygen for a combustable material to burn following the regular chemical reaction there will be a (partly) alternative combustion which is called an incomplete combustion. With an incomplete combustion you will get (partially) different reaction products.
One of the most hazardous of those reaction products is carbonmonoxide.
