Gerund: when to use
  • als zelfstandig naamwoord;
  • na werkwoorden die een mening uitdrukken, zoals to hate, to like, to love, to enjoy
  • na de werkwoorden to start, to begin, to continue en to stop
  • na voorzetsels (after, before, while, at etc.)
  • na bepaalde uitdrukkingen: it’s no use, it’s (not) worth, don’t mind, to look forward to
Swimming is my greatest hobby.
I love talking to my granddad.
Jane started talking as soon as she came in.
Please take off your shoes before entering the room.
It’s no use trying to convince him.

Infinitive: when to use
  • Na werkwoorden die een gevoel of gedachte uitdrukken, zoals to hope, to want, to expect, to choose en to hesitate
  • Na werkwoorden die ‘iets zeggen’ uitdrukken, zoals to agree, to promise, to demand, to forbid en to refuse
  • In combinatie met would love, would hate, would like enz.
  • Een aantal werkwoorden waarbij je altijd de infinitive moet gebruiken: to learn, to manage, to fail en to tend.
We forbid you to leave the house.
I would love to help you, but I can’t

Exception: to remember
  • Als je vooruitkijkt naar de toekomst (betekenis: iets onthouden), gebruik je de infinitive.
  • Als je terugkijkt naar het verleden (betekenis: je iets herinneren), gebruik je de gerund.
Remember to close the door when you leave.
They don’t remember meeting you.
