We use 'any' in negative statements (ontkenningen) and in most questions (when multiple answers are possible).

1. They don't sell any milk.
2. Do you have any idea where my phone is?

We use 'some' in affirmative sentences (bevestigende zinnen). These are sentences that are not negative, nor a question.
 
I have some news for you
I'd like some apples.

Exeptions (uitzonderingen)
You use 'some' instead of 'any' in the following: 
  1. in questions where you expect the answer to be  'yes'.
    Could I have
    some bread, please? 
  2. in questions when you are offering someone something.  
     Would you like some tea?

Exeptions (continued)
You use 'any' instead of 'some' in affirmative (bevestigende) sentences, with negative words in them (never, without, hardly).

I have never had any problems.
He went on a world trip without any concrete plans.
