Amal Al-Saffar: A Brave Adventurer
Amal Al-Saffar is from Bahrain, which is a very hot and flat country with no mountains. Amal, in 2013, at the age of 20, became the first Bahraini woman to visit the freezing Antarctic.
Amal was born and raised in Bahrain. She studied International Logistics Management at Bahrain Polytechnic. In 2011, she won the Green Earth Scholarship on Environment and Waste Management at Northampton University in the UK. She also won a scholarship to join a leadership programme at University of Kansas in 2012.
Despite her young age, Amal had a full and active life. In 2013, she was chosen to join the 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador Programme and spent two months in the Antarctic, becoming the first Bahraini to visit the North Pole. A year later, in 2014, she went on to climb the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, and then crossed the Arctic Circle in 2015. She did all of that while studying at university and despite the difficulties she had in funding her trips and training for them.
Amal’s achievements made everybody admire her, especially that adventure had always been a male field, and a young woman doing it can still seem unusual to some people. Amal hopes that her achievements will inspire people to go on adventures themselves, or at least to have a greener life.
