Today's Lesson
After this lesson, you...
... can use strategies to predict what a text is about before reading it.
... know what to do when you don't know a word in a text.

Slide 2 - Slide

What are the first things you do when you start a reading test?

Slide 3 - Open question

Predicting
- Look at title, subtitle and pictures.
- Find out what the source of the text is. What is the genre of the text?
- Use your knowledge to predict what the text could be about before actually reading the test.

Slide 4 - Slide

What do you think this text is about?

Slide 5 - Slide

What do you do if you don't know a word?

Slide 6 - Open question

Use context
Context is the words or phrases that surround a word.

"He was sent to the principal because he made insolent remarks towards his teacher."

Slide 7 - Slide

Consider this sentence: "In Australia, she is an eminent surgeon even though she is totally unknown in Europe."

What does the word eminent mean?

Slide 8 - Open question

What if you don't know a word?
Decide: is the word important? Do I need to know it to understand the text? If yes...
Strategy 1: decide what the word means by looking at the context. Is it a verb or a noun? Is it positive or negative? Does it contain parts of words you know?
Strategy 2: if you are allowed to have a dictionary, look up the word. Watch out, this takes quite a lot of time!
