What will I learn today?
* After class, I will be able to recognize 3 ways in which words in English can be combined to form other words or names.

* After class, I will be able to visualize combination words when I know the meaning of the two base words.

* After class, I will have experimented with combining words in English.

Slide 2 - Slide

Do tell them that unlike in Dutch, in English we do not tend to combine words very often.
This process of blending words is quite modern and those will not be discussed today as we will be practising the blending of words in a game style context not fully related to actual English.

Sandslash

Sand - Slash
Gloom
Gloomy - Bloom
Torkoal
Tortoise - Coal

Slide 3 - Slide

First up: Sandslash
Now this is an easy one, its just two words stitched together into a new name!

But there are other forms too, that may be more of a stretch...

Now, in Gloom's case, both words are used partially but they are still fully intact.

In Torkoal's case, however, the word 'coal' has been misspelled and/or adapted in the new and combined word.

This pokémon's name is Turtwig.

What two words were used to create its name?

Slide 4 - Open question

turtle
twig

This one is similar to the second example, partial words but undamaged.
This pokémon's name is Litwick.

What two words were used to create its name?

Slide 5 - Open question

lit
wick

This is like example one, the words do not change and are simply stuck together.
This pokémon's name is Charjabug.
What two words were used to create its name?

Slide 6 - Open question

Charger
Bug
(or charge a bug)

the word 'charger' is adapted to make it into a name.

Slide 7 - Slide

Tell them to take a screenshot as they need this list for the rest of the lesson.
Come up with three (3) names for new pokémon using one (1) word from each of the columns.

Slide 8 - Mind map

Tell them to write their own answers down so that they won't forget them for the next task.

Ask them if they can also attempt to use the three different forms discussed in the previous question.
Pick out one of the three names you just made up and draw what it looks like.
