Formal/Informal

Thesis Statements

These days, it seems like everyone is glued to their phone. Whether they are scrolling through TikTok, replying to messages or just checking what their friends are up to, young people spend a huge chunk of their day online. Some people say this is no big deal and that social media is simply part of modern life. Others think it is seriously messing with the way teenagers communicate and even how they feel about themselves. There are good points on both sides, but when you really look at the issue, it is pretty clear that social media has a major impact on young people's lives and we need to think carefully about whether that impact is actually a positive one.

Which words/phrases could/should be changed in order to make this more formal?

Which words/phrases could/should be changed in order to make this more formal?

In contemporary society, social media has become an integral part of young people's daily lives. Whether communicating with others, consuming online content or keeping informed about their social circles, many adolescents spend a considerable amount of time using digital platforms. While some argue that social media is simply an inevitable aspect of modern life, others maintain that it can negatively affect the way teenagers communicate and perceive themselves. Although social media offers certain benefits, its excessive use can have a predominantly negative impact on young people by reducing the quality of face-to-face communication, increasing social pressure and negatively affecting their self-image.

Is the author positive or negative concerning the benefits of social media for the youth?

Should social media companies be held responsible for the negative effects their platforms have on young people's mental well-being?

Does the increasing use of artificial intelligence in education ultimately improve students' learning, or does it make them less independent as learners?

To what extent should governments restrict individual freedoms in order to address environmental problems such as climate change?

Should social media companies be held responsible for the negative effects their platforms have on young people's mental well-being?

Social media companies should be held partly responsible for the negative effects of their platforms because they deliberately design features to maximise engagement and have a responsibility to protect younger users.

Does the increasing use of artificial intelligence in education ultimately improve students' learning, or does it make them less independent as learners?

Although artificial intelligence can support students' learning, excessive reliance on it may reduce their ability to think critically and work independently.

To what extent should governments restrict individual freedoms in order to address environmental problems such as climate change?

Governments are justified in restricting certain individual freedoms when such measures significantly reduce environmental harm, provided that the restrictions are proportionate and do not unnecessarily limit personal choice.

Formulating Arguments

Goals for Today

Look at two templates for formulating an introduction to an essay (5-10 min)

Practice formulating an argument on controversial topics

Create/Use a Read Theory Account to practice reading. (Time remaining)

[Topic] has become an important issue in modern society. While [one perspective], [another perspective]. This essay will consider [the two points] and determine [which is more important/effective/beneficial].

There is considerable debate over [topic], particularly when it comes to [specific issue]. Although [point A] can play an important role, [point B] should not be overlooked. This essay will examine both before considering which has the greater impact.

Introduction Templates

Providing useful local facilities has become an important issue in modern society. While some believe museums are underfunded and deserve more attention, others feel sport centres provide a more essential service and deserve more funding. This essay will consider the value of funding museums and sport centres and determine which is more important.

There is considerable debate over the funding of local facilities, particularly when it comes to museum and public gardens. Although the cultural impact of museums can play an important role, the health benefits of public gardens should not be overlooked. This essay will examine both before considering which has the greater impact.

  1. “You should be allowed to vote from the age of 16.”

  2. “Being rich is more important than having a job you love.”

  3. “Parents should have the right to know where their 16-year-old is at all times.”

  4. “Celebrities and influencers have a responsibility to be good role models.”

  5. “It is acceptable to end a friendship because you strongly disagree with someone’s beliefs.”

Take a stance on two of the issues below.

OPINION → REASON → EXAMPLE → COUNTERARGUMENT → RESPONSE

Personally, I believe that people should be allowed to vote from the age of 16. The main reason I feel this way is that many political decisions directly affect teenagers. For example, decisions about climate change or public transport will have consequences for young people for decades. Admittedly, some 16-year-olds may not know much about politics. However, the same could be said of some adult voters, so I do not think this is a convincing reason to deny them the right to vote.
