Vaak staan er signaalwoorden in de zin. Woorden die een signaal afgeven dat de zin in de past simple, oftewel verleden tijd, staat. Dit kan vooraan of achteraan. 

Denk aan: yesterday, last week, last year, three days ago, in 1989.

Basisregel = -ed achter de stam
Maakt niet uit of je het over I, you, we of they hebt.

1. Werkwoorden die eindigen op -e, krijgen alleen een -d > to bake - baked
2. Werkwoorden eindigend op -c, krijgen -ked > to panic - she panicked
3. Werkwoorden die eindigen op -y, krijgen -ied > to marry - she married
4. Korte werkwoorden met één klinker en maar één klemtoon mogelijk, krijgen een extra medeklinker > to swap - swapped
5. Werkwoorden die eindigen op een -l, met één klinker ervoor, krijgen een extra -l > to travel - travelled
