5.2 Colonial time and the Dutch Indies

Dutch seamerchants sail to Indonesia and build tradeposts there for the VOC. (Around 1600) 

Slowly they start colonising; take over and profiting from a certain area.

Batavia (1942 Jakarta) is the headquarters for +/- 200 years.

Around 1900 the Dutch govern the whole area. 

You can still see Dutch characteristics:

- Houses

- Remnants of the Dutch language: polisi (politie),
                                                                           bis (bus) en knalpot(uitlaat)
                                                                           kopi(koffie), gratis,

The original population works on
the plantation, in housekeeping
or work as nanny's. (baboe)

They are very much underpayed.
