  1. You know how 2 characteristics of precipitation have changed because of climate
    change
  2. You can explain how climate change influences the amount of precipitation.
  3. You are able to explain why and how the regime and flow rate of rivers is changing. (G
    120)
  4. You are able to draw a cross-section of a Dutch river.
  5. You can come up with 5 measures to give water in the river more space.
  6. You can explain the significance of the Room for the River programme.
  7. You can explain how climate change can cause salinization.
  8. You know a solution to solve the problem of salinization.
  9. You know the water cycle (the natural- and urban watercycle). (G118)
  10. You know 3 solutions to protect against water problems in towns and cities.

Slide 7 - Slide

REGIME
Fluctuations in a river's flow rate in a year.
FLOW RATE
The amount of water flowing at a particular point in the river (expressed in m3/sec).

Slide 11 - Slide

FLOODPLAINS
Area between dikes and the river bed.

Slide 12 - Slide

WATER MEASURES

Slide 14 - Slide

You can explain how climate change influences the amount of precipitation.
Climate change
  • Warmer = more water vapour above sea = more moiste air above land
  • More rain instead of snow
  • Heavy downpours, especially in summer

EXERCISE 3
a. A river consists of a principal river and many tributaries, and together they form a large river system.
b. That a lot of water is carried away

Slide 17 - Slide

W9 in next slide
a. A water outlet on the other side of the dike; it is only needed when water levels are extremely high.
b. An extra drainage channel between the dike and the river bed, used when the water level is high.
f. 1 Make the river bed deeper.
2. Remove the brickworks and summer dikes.

Slide 18 - Slide

Slide 19 - Slide

f. A secondary channel was created for drainage when the water level is high.
EXERCISE 6

Slide 20 - Slide

The west of the Netherlands is close to the sea, and salt water can easily penetrate inland during periods of drought.

Slide 21 - Slide

Slide 22 - Slide

EXERCISE 10
a. Two possible maps:
44A: The water from many catchment areas of international rivers flows into the Netherlands.
44B: Flood waves in the catchment area of the Rhine flow into the Netherlands.
b. after 5 days
c. From December until the end of April. In this period, the flow rate (the amount of water flowing at a particular point in the river) is highest.

Slide 23 - Slide

c. River water must be stored there if it cannot flow into the sea because of a storm.
